This image captures a faint Hα nebula extending across the northern part of the constellation Pyxis.
In the Northern Hemisphere, its low altitude at culmination makes it difficult to observe clearly.
However, the nebula spans more than 14 degrees from east to west and is considered to be an outer shell of the Gum Nebula, which extends at 14 degrees south into the constellation Vela.
Sh2-312 stretches in a band-like structure from the northwest to the southeast, and bends southward at its southwestern end.
Sh2-312 encompasses the entire nebula visible in this photograph, with smaller parts of the nebula assigned numbers in Lynds' Bright Nebula (LBN) catalog.
