A small reflection nebula located 2 degrees northwest of κ Orionis is vdB55. It spans approximately 1 degree and reflects the light from a bluish-white star with a magnitude of 8.9 at the center of the image. This area corresponds to the heart of the southern part of Barnard's Loop, and it is believed that the components of vdB55 consist of the same interstellar gas. A dark nebula runs through the center of the nebula, dividing it into two sections: southwest and northeast. The estimated distance from the solar system is approximately 1050 light-years.
