NGC4517 is a comparatively larger edge-on galaxy at 3 degrees northwest of gamma Vir. The galaxy has an apparent brightness of 11th magnitude and a long axis of over 10 arc minutes, you can recognize its indistinct shape with larger telescopes. NGC4517 has been classified as a spiral but the central bulge looks unevolved. This image shows a minor dark lane crossing the center of galaxy.
You can find out a companion galaxy of NGC4517A at about 20 arc minutes north of NGC4517. The galaxy looks dimmer with 12.5th magnitude in brightness. The structure seems indistinct but the galaxy has been grouped in the barred galaxy.
