This image captures a small galaxy floating 6 degrees northwest of γ Virginis (Porrima). The galaxy visible in the upper right of the frame is NGC4480, a barred spiral galaxy a little over 2 arcminutes in length. The galaxy located 25 arcminutes to its southeast is NGC4496A, also a barred spiral galaxy but with a disrupted spiral structure. Just south of NGC4496A lies NGC4496B, an irregular galaxy about 1 arcminute across. Although these galaxies appear to be colliding, it is known that NGC4496B is more than twice as distant, meaning there is no direct physical connection-they only appear superimposed by chance.
