IC 972 is a small planetary nebula located near the southeastern edge of the constellation Virgo; 7.2 degrees SSW of κ Virginis.
It has a roughly circular shape with an apparent diameter of about 50 arcseconds.
The center appears blue, while the outer region emits red Hα light. Although extremely faint in this image, the central star is an 18th-magnitude white dwarf.
The distance of IC 972 from the Solar System is estimated to be around 7260 light-years, although this value has a significant margin of error.
