These are two small reflection nebulae located in the southern part of Canis Major, about 4.3 degrees WNW of ε Canis Majoris, the star forming the constellation's hind leg. In this photograph, vdB 83 appears in the upper (northern) part of the frame, while vdB 84 lies about 10 arcminutes to the south. Both nebulae reflect the light of the 6th-7th magnitude stars at their centers, and the gas forming the nebulae is shared between them. Although no distance information is available, they are thought to be reflection nebulae originating from interstellar gas belonging to the star-forming region spread across the southern part of Canis Major, the Canis Major OB2 association.
