Objects around Wolf's Cave Nebula
|
This image captures the distribution of faint nebulae located about 3.8 degrees east of β Cephei.
The bluish reflection nebula visible toward the bottom of the frame is vdB 152, where the southern edge of the molecular cloud reflects the light of a 9th-magnitude blue star.
Extending northward from this point is the dark nebula LDN 1217, stretching for more than 50 arcminutes like a wisp of smoke.
Because of its unique appearance, it is sometimes nicknamed the "Wolf's Cave Nebula."
About 50 arcminutes northeast of vdB 152 lies PK 111+11.1, which emits faint red Hα light.
Its shape is highly distorted, and it is classified as an evolved planetary nebula.
In addition, extending northeastward from vdB 152 is a filamentary nebula (LBN 538) that also emits Hα radiation.
Although its nature is not fully understood, it is thought to be part of a shock front generated by a nearby supernova explosion.
