Objects around Shark Nebula
|
This image captures a faint nebula with a unique shape, located 4.5 degrees northeast of β Cephei.
The emission nebula LBN 535 extends about 2.5 degrees east to west, and at its northeastern end lie the reflection nebula vdB 150 and the dark nebula LDN 1235.
Because these nebulae resemble the profile of a shark facing left, they are affectionately known by the nickname "Shark Nebula."
However, the nebula itself is extremely faint and can only be seen in long-exposure images.
It represents part of the large molecular cloud known as the Cepheus Flare, which spreads across the northern region of Cepheus, and happens to present this striking appearance.
