This is a wide-field image capturing a group of faint nebulae with distinctive shapes, located in the northern part of the Cepheus pentagon shown on the previous page. At the bottom edge of the frame lies the reflection nebula vdB 152, from which a narrow streak of dark nebula (the Wolf's Cave Nebula) extends northward. Just north of 24 Cephei is the so-called "Shark Nebula" - a formation resembling a shark's profile, consisting of the dark nebula LDN 1235 and the emission nebula LBN 535. Also visible in the image are the planetary nebula PK 111+11.1 and part of the extremely faint, arc-shaped emission nebula LBN 538.

This photograph covers a 17×11° field in the northern part of Cepheus, centered on vdB 152 (the Wolf's Cave Nebula) and LDN 1235 (the Shark Nebula). The bright star at the lower right of the frame is beta Cephei.
Although much of the field appears to be veiled in haze, this region, which lies just north of the autumn Milky Way, is occupied by the extremely large and faint molecular cloud known as the Cepheus Flare. In addition to the Shark Nebula at the center, features such as LBN 558, located about 2.5° to the northeast, are areas where this molecular cloud happens to appear more concentrated.
