Sh2-46 is a slightly faint Hα nebula seen near the southern end of the constellation Serpens (Cauda). It is located about 1.5 degrees west of the famous Eagle Nebula (M16) in the same constellation. It has an almost circular shape with an apparent diameter of about 20 arc minutes and does not exhibit a very complex structure. It is estimated to be 2,000 light-years away from the Solar System.
