Objects around Sh2-306 |
This image captures a region on the far western edge of Puppis, near the border with Canis Major.
This area, located a little over 11° ESE of Sirius, contains several red Hα nebulae clustered within a region about 2° across.
Each area is assigned Sharpless Catalog numbers from Sh2-305 to Sh2-309.
All of these nebulae lie at distances of about 13,000 to 14,000 light-years,
and they are thought to be parts of the same interstellar gas cloud that is being ionized separately in each region, causing them to glow red.
