NGC5422 is a small lenticular galaxy located 50 arcminutes north of the spiral galaxy M101, which itself lies 5 degrees east of Mizar in Ursa Major. NGC5422 has a spindle-like shape about 4 arcminutes in length and presents a well-balanced edge-on profile. Its distance from the Milky Way is approximately 100 million light-years. Although many small galaxies belonging to the M101 Group are scattered in the surrounding region, NGC5422 is situated about five times farther away and is therefore unrelated to M101.
