NGC 4178 is a faint barred spiral galaxy located in the southwestern part of the Virgo Cluster.
It can be found 2.8 degrees northeast of ο Virginis, with a major axis of about 5 arcminutes and a brightness of approximately 12th magnitude.
One of the distinguishing features of NGC 4178 is its central bulge, which is dim and underdeveloped compared to typical galaxies.
Recent studies have revealed that the mass of the black hole at its center is between 104 and 105 times the mass of the Sun,
making it one of the lightest known black holes in center of galaxies.
