An elliptical galaxy a bit upper center is 12th magnitude NGC4008 and peculiar one just south is 14th magnitude NGC4004. Both have long axis of a bit longer than 2 arc minutes, actually not particularly eye-catching. NGC4004 has a characteristic stretched arm to south direction. It is considered that the structure is caused by interaction of IC2982 lying just west of the galaxy. Those galaxies are floating at about 150 to 160 million light years away, forming a small-scaled group with NGC4017 outside of the image in south. |
