NGC3917 is a spiral galaxy located 1.9 degrees south of γ Ursae Majoris, one of the stars forming the Big Dipper. Its central bulge is poorly developed and its spiral structure is indistinct. The galaxy has a major-axis diameter of just over 5 arcminutes and an apparent magnitude of 12.5. Like many galaxies distributed in this region, it is a member of the Ursa Major North Galaxy Group, and its distance is estimated to be about 55 million light-years. A tiny edge-on galaxy seen 6 arcminutes west is UGC6802.
