NGC2242 is a small planetary nebula hidden about 6 degrees east of β Aurigae, the star marking the northeastern corner of Auriga's pentagon. It has a reddish, nearly circular appearance with an apparent diameter of only 22 arcseconds; in this image it appears indistinct, and its central star is of about 17th magnitude. The distance from the Solar System is estimated to be around 6500 light-years.
