These are two inconspicuous reflection nebulae seen in the southeastern part of Auriga. They can be found about 4 degrees northeast of β Tauri, the southernmost star forming the pentagon of Auriga. In the photograph, the reflection nebula in the upper left is NGC 1985, while about 16 arcminutes to the southwest, a faint glow surrounding an 8th-magnitude star is vdB 45; both are small objects with sizes of around 1 arcminute. NGC 1985 was once regarded as an old planetary nebula and assigned a planetary-nebula designation, but it is now thought to be a region within a molecular cloud where star formation is ongoing.
