Objects around NGC1788
The reflection nebula about 5 arcminutes across at the top of the frame is NGC1788, located in the western part of Orion near the boundary with Eridanus. It lies roughly 2 degrees north of β Eridani. NGC1788 shines by reflecting the light from foreground stars situated in front of the large dark nebula complex that spreads throughout this region. At the center of the nebula is a rather intricate structure where the dark nebula LDN 1616 is interwoven. Extending westward from this point is the molecular cloud LDN 1615, which also has a dark]nebula designation, and farther to the south, more molecular clouds of complex shape spread out. About 0.5 degrees south of NGC1788, a clump of molecular clouds extends eastward; this area is designated LBN 923.

This is a close-up image of NGC1788. You can clearly see the complex structure where the dark nebula LDN 1616 is intertwined with it. The reflection nebula is illuminated by a 10th-magnitude star located in the northwest part of the nebula.
