NGC173 is a small spiral galaxy located near the border with Pisces, about 11.6 degrees NNE of ι Ceti at the westernmost edge of Cetus. It has a major-axis diameter of about 3 arcminutes and an apparent brightness of 13th magnitude, with faint spiral arms that can be discerned. The distance from the Milky Way is estimated to be roughly 200 million light-years, and it is thought to form part of the same galaxy group as the members of Hickson Compact Group 7 (HCG 7), which lie about 1.2 degrees to the SSE.
