The Milky Way in winter looks very indistinct because the area corresponds to opposite side of Milky Way in summer in which the Galactic center is included. Perhaps it's comparatively hard to appreciate it unless you're blessed with extraordinary good transparency condition at suburban areas. However many emission nebulae are bathed in the Milky Way in winter.
Moreover, the vicinity contains seven bright stars over 1st magnitude of all twenty stars included in the celestial sphere, and very striking constellations like the Orion are paralleling.
