Objects around Sh2-284 to 287
This is a wide-area image of 16.5×11° around the winter Milky Way flowing in the southern part of the constellation Monoceros. Three bright Hα nebulae, Sh2-280, 282 & 284, located just south of the Rosette Nebula, are visible in the upper part of the image. A magnified image of these three nebulae can be browsed in previous page.
Just southeast of Sh2-284, you can see a faint red circular nebula with a span of over 2 degrees. This is a supernova remnant SNR G213.0-0.6 discovered by radio observation. It is located 7800 light-years away and has an actual diameter of 350 light-years, and is considered to be one of the largest supernova remnants in the Milky Way. Although it can be caught on modern digital images, it is not registered in the major catalogs of diffuse nebulae.
A large Hα nebula Sh2-287 is also floating about 4 degrees further southeast. The size in the catalog is 12 arc minutes, but in this image you can see that the size is more than 2 degrees.
