NGC 4689 is a face-on galaxy situated at the boundary of the constellations Coma Berenices and Virgo, approximately 4.5 degrees northwest of ε Virginis.
This region corresponds to the easternmost edge of the Virgo Cluster. The apparent diameter of this galaxy is around 4 arcminutes, and it has a brightness of 11th magnitude.
While the central bulge and its surrounding inner ring are distinct, the outer spiral structure appears very faint.
Interactions within the Virgo Cluster have led to the stripping of interstellar gas in this galaxy, resulting in a significantly reduced level of star-forming activity.
Galaxies exhibiting such characteristics are referred to as "anemic galaxies".
