This image shows a faint molecular cloud and dark nebula located about 4.3 degrees southwest of γ Cephei, which marks the northernmost point of the Cepheus pentagon.
The molecular cloud, LBN 558, extends across almost the entire field of view and spans a little over 2 degrees east to west.
At its eastern end lies the complexly shaped dark nebula LDN 1251. These nebulae are denser portions of the vast molecular cloud known as the Cepheus Flare, which covers the northern part of Cepheus.
Though not very well known, this nebula is sometimes given the rather unflattering nickname "Rotten Fish Nebula".
