This image captures molecular clouds and dark nebulae floating about 3.7 degrees SSW of γ Cephei, the northernmost star of the constellation. The molecular cloud in the lower right (southwest) is LBN 573, while the one in the upper left (northeast) is LBN 575, each with a major axis of 30 to 40 arcminutes. Additionally, the shadowed region at the center of LBN 575 is cataloged as the dark nebula LDN 1262.
These molecular clouds are dense clumps of interstellar gas, part of the massive molecular cloud complex known as the Cepheus Flare, located roughly 100 light-years from the solar system. Due to their appearance as two separate clumps, they are sometimes referred to as the "Dog Bone Nebula."
