Roughly speaking, lunar surface is covered uncountable craters in southern region, while the northern region has several large basins with their insides filled by dark basaltic lava, and isolated craters are distributed on them.
The Plato is a typical isolated crater with a diameter of 101km. The interior has same color with lunar sea on the outskirts. This feature tells us that the crater has been filled with lava. This is one of characteristics of very aged craters. The Frigoris, MARE (Sea of Frigidity) is lying just north of Plato, and a mountainous region has spread in higher latitude.
