These images have been created by composing 7 shots of total lunar eclipse on Dec 10, 2011, aligned each position of taken times. The Moon moved from right to left, upper and lower images indicate movements of Moon relative to background star field and Umbra of the Earth shown as a broken circle, respectively. Maybe you can understand that the shadow edge of eclipsed Moon is indicating an outline of the Umbra from a lower image.
